IDENTITY AND INTEGRATION OF REFUGEES TO CITY SOCIETY DISCUSSION ROUND MS. MAREIKE WULF, DEPUTY CHAIRWOMAN OF THE CDU PARLIAMENTARY GROUP IN LOWER SAXONY’S STATE PARLIAMENT
October 20, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 7:30 pm
*Registration required – see below *
The perception of the social environment and one’s own identity from a national and religious point of view is common to all people, but it plays a special role among refugees. They were forced to leave their homeland and carry with them their national and religious identities as well as imprints from their homeland and their region. Thus, every attempt to integrate into the new society needs time, also because of questions related to the reciprocal image of oneself and others and the strategies for dealing with them. Integration into the new society (social system, culture, and language) are processes that require not only the effort of the refugees but also the support of the local community and its willingness to accept them.
Following on a workshop in which Syrian refugees deal with questions of identity and integration, we invite you to a discussion round to exchange views with the participants of the workshop on the challenges of integration and the opportunities for political and social participation in the integration process.
In this way, we want to create space for dialogue between refugees and representatives of the host society and thus contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.
Ms. Mareike Wulf, Deputy Chairwoman of the CDU parliamentary group in Lower Saxony’s state parliament, will give an impulse on the role of political and social participation in integration.
