IDENTITY AND INTEGRATION OF REFUGEES INTO THE TOWN’S SOCIETY Workshop and discussion round

October 20, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 7:30 pm

You were forced to leave your homeland. But you carry with you your national and religious identity and imprints from Syria and your region. All people (also) perceive their social environment and their own identity from national and religious points of view. In a new, initially foreign environment, however, this plays a special role. Any attempt to integrate into the new society takes time. Questions related to the mutual image of oneself and of others and strategies for dealing with them also come into play here. Integration into the new society (social system, culture and language) are processes that require not only your efforts, but also the support of local people and their willingness to accept.

Through our event we want to create a space for dialogue between refugees and representatives of the host society. We will talk about factors that can influence and promote local integration and discuss possibilities for social and political participation.

The event will be divided into two parts. The first part is a workshop to which only you – Syrians – are invited to first discuss the following topics: building of social identity, strategies for integration and possibilities as well as opportunities for civic participation in a pluralistic society. You will create a presentation about challenges and your integration problems and work out proposals for solutions. You will also discuss the role of political and social participation, i.e. the question of how you can become visible on the ground and help shape the life of the town’ s society in a democratic spirit. Furthermore, we will be introducing the Young Leaders for Syria Platform, which offers young Syrians a room for discussion and networking.

to discuss problems and proposed solutions directly together, the second part of the event will be an open discussion round – Mrs. Mareike Wulf, Member of the State Parliament of the CDU in Lower Saxony, will give a keynote speech on participation opportunities and their role in integration. The topic will then be discussed with other guests from Hanover and the surrounding area.
